WATERISE PARTNERS IN PANTELLERIA TO STUDY TRADITIONAL NATURE‑BASED WATER SOLUTIONS
The WATERISE consortium will gather in Pantelleria on 16–18 September 2026 for a Study Visit dedicated to exploring the island’s traditional nature‑based water solutions and strengthening cooperation among Mediterranean islands facing water scarcity.
Organised by the Municipality of Pantelleria, the three‑day programme combines field visits, stakeholder exchanges and the in‑person Consortium Meeting, contributing to the advancement of the project’s study phase and to the identification of Water‑Wise Best Practices for tourism‑oriented communities. The visit takes place shortly after the island celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Pantelleria National Park, which today protects around 80% of the island’s territory, demonstrating how safeguarding traditional, nature‑based practices can coexist with sustainable tourism development.
Participants will explore emblematic sites showcasing indigenous water management systems, including selected dammusi, cisterne, giardini panteschi and the terraced agricultural landscapes featuring vite ad alberello, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
On 18 September, partners will convene at the Municipality of Pantelleria for the WATERISE Consortium Meeting, held in the framework of the Interreg Cooperation Day 2026. The agenda includes institutional greetings, technical contributions from partner institutions, and the official launch of the project’s Community of Practice, reinforcing shared learning and transnational cooperation.
The Study Visit will conclude with a Study Circle connecting field observations with the project’s methodological framework on NbS. The session will help partners reflect on comparable traditional water‑wise practices from their own islands, identifying solutions transmitted across generations that continue to support local resilience.
