A delegation from the WATERISE project took part in the MED Sustainable Tourism Convention 2026, held on 18–19 June at the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona. The event gathered Mediterranean regions, universities and tourism authorities to discuss climate resilience, sustainable resource management and emerging tourism transitions.
WATERISE contributed to the round table Water Scarcity and Tourism, where Ms Margherita Maniscalco (contact person for the WATERISE project of the Municipality of Pantelleria) presented the project’s approach to addressing water scarcity in tourist islands through Nature‑based Solutions and the valorisation of traditional Mediterranean water heritage. The intervention highlighted how NbS -constructed wetlands, rainwater harvesting and atmospheric water generation – can complement existing infrastructures and support water‑wise tourism models.
At the margins of the Convention, Carlo De Marco, Secretary General of the Border Towns and Islands Network (BTIN), recorded a video interview on WATERISE, strengthening visibility and cooperation across Mediterranean islands.
Participation in the Convention reinforces WATERISE’s role within the Interreg Euro‑MED Sustainable Tourism Community and supports the project’s ongoing work to design practical, low‑impact solutions for water‑wise tourism in Mediterranean destinations.
